Survivor Experience Training Animation | Rape & Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre

Silver Lining Animation partnered with the Rape & Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre (RSACC) to create a training animation that explores the lived experiences of survivors of sexual violence and abuse. Developed for use in professional training environments, the film helps audiences gain a deeper understanding of the long-term impact of trauma and the challenges survivors may face in their everyday lives. Based on a script written by Open Clasp Theatre Company, the animation follows three women as they navigate daily situations, revealing their internal thought processes, emotional triggers, coping mechanisms, and responses to the world around them. Rather than focusing on the traumatic events themselves, the film centres on the ongoing realities of living with trauma and recovery. A key part of the production process was collaboration with survivors through a series of focus groups facilitated by RSACC. Participants were involved throughout the project, providing feedback on the script, storyboard, and character designs to help ensure the animation authentically reflected survivor experiences. This co-production approach was essential in creating a training resource that is both accurate and respectful. A distinctive creative approach was taken by showing only the feet of each character, identified through their footwear. While technically challenging from an animation perspective, this visual style removes factors such as age, ethnicity, and appearance, encouraging viewers to focus on the experiences being portrayed and helping a wider audience connect with the stories. The result is a powerful and empathetic training resource that supports trauma-informed practice and survivor-centred approaches.
